San Shou is a hybird of kickboxing with wrestling throws. No groundwork allowed, as soon as a match goes onthemat the fight will be restarted. This can provide for some entertaing bouts. Not only was the event in OntheMat’s own (California backyard), but two of our friends decided to test their skills by entering this event!
The event was actually divided into two events, the first being an amature event and extreme sports festival. There were three rings (well, two mats and ring) of action going on inside the gymnasium of an amature tournament, along with sports such as minature motorized bikes and a skateboard park set up outside. The combination provided by combining “extreme sports” and martial arts action made for an entertaining day. The second portion involved the “professional” league, where winners of the days advanced divisions had the “honor” of fighting the host Cung Le’s school champions. These bouts were quite exciting. (Special note goes to Patrick Berry for winning his fight. Outweighed by 20 pounds in this bout, Patrick had *driven* all the way from New Orlenes the night before and won a hard fought decision, plus he had the most unusual cheering section I’ve seen in awhile). The headliner of the night was when Cung Le faced off against his own top student Rudy Ott in an exhibition match.
All in all a nice change of pace and a fun event, and if you have the opportunity to watch Sang Shou live you should definitely check it out.
