December 8, 2001, Miami, Florida- Submission Fighters from Florida and many other states such as Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Ohio made the journey to compete in the NAGA`s 1st Annual US National event. The event featured 56 Gi & No-Gi Grappling Divisions, along with several World Class Superfights.

SUPERIGHT RESULTS:

4-Man Tournament (Round 1)Roberto “Gordo” Correara vs. David Avellon

Roberto “Gordo” Correara, a two time world black belt absolute champion had a very challenging 1st match against local champion, David Avellon. Gordo started strong by getting the first half-guard sweep and getting side mount. Then Dave managed to get back up to his feet and proceeded to take Gordo down. The fight went back and forth with both fighters earning advantages. In the end, the judges selected Gordo the winner. It was a very close match that exhausted both fighters. Dave should be proud of his performance and we look forward to having both gentlemen back in competition next year.

Leonel Perez vs. Ryan Stout

NAGA representatives asked Leonel Perez, the US National Advanced Division Champion from the event, if he would step up and fight in the 4-man tourney. Leonel was more than happy to accept the challenge. His match against the IFC Middleweight Champion, Ryan Stout was very exciting. Both competitors showed tremendous strength and speed. The battle raged on for 6 minutes. Leonel’s submission skills proved superior as he finished the match at 6:11 via Arm Bar. Hats off to Ryan who flew in from Ohio and also took the match on short notice after teammate Chris Wells was unable to make the trip.

Superfight #2

Helio Moreiro “Soneca” vs. Jorge Jorgel

The crowd was given a special treat when World & Pan American Champion Soneca offered to fight in a NAGA Superfight. His opponent was a 6 Time Brazilian State Champion, Jorge Gurgel. The lightweight battle reminded me of Barret Yoshida fighting in Abu Dhabi with lighting fast execution of technique, reverses, and submission attempts. This match was governed by Abu Dhabi Rules, since no points were scored, the match was deemed a draw.

Special Thanks:

I wanted to thank all of the fighters and spectators who made the trip to Miami this past weekend. With Christmas being right around the corned, it’s hard not only to train but also afford to compete. I wanted to thank Marcos Avellon, our NAGA Florida representative for all his help this year. Marcos is absolutely the best promoter I have had the pleasure of knowing in the 15 years I have been involved with sport fighting. I also wanted to thank Gordon Hester for helping put together the Gordo Superfight. Gordon and Joe D’Arce ran all of the BJJ rings that day as well. As always, special thanks to Mary, Stephanie, Joe & Laura who made the trip to Florida and ran the show.
