Murphy, who is a Purple Belt in Jiu-Jitsu under Cleber Luciano, has now submitted 5 of his 6 opponents since making his professional MMA debut 3 years ago. He has only won once via decision. Murphy is also an active competitor on the national jiu-jitsu and submission grappling circuit, which has seen him win the advanced divisions in the Best of the West Championships and Grapplers Quest World Series within the last year.

Murphy’s win on Saturday night was a featured 135-pound attraction on the inaugural fight card for the Fight Club OC – MMA Series. The event was headlined with Tyson "The Antihero" Jeffries vs. Keith "KO Kid" Berry in middleweight action. The first-ever Saturday night installment of Fight Club OC saw many familar faces in attendance, including UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell. The show, hosted by promoter Roy Englebrecht, featured six MMA cage fights. This was a change from the promoter’s popular Fight Club OC events held on Thursday nights, which feature both Boxing and MMA bouts.
