On Friday, June 19, 2009, Strikeforce will host its second ShoMMA – Strikeforce Challengers event at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington. ShoMMA is a MMA series produced by Strikeforce and the Showtime cable network. Similar to Showtime’s earlier ShoXC, the purpose of the series is to highlight up-and-coming MMA fighters. The event, which will be located in the outskirts of Seattle was sanctioned by the Washington State Athletic Commission. Unlike other athletic commisions, the WSAC did not permit one-pound allowances during the weigh-ins. In response, Strikeforce made contracts that automatically defaulted into catchweights to allow fighters the extra pound, which is common in MMA. The main event will feature a middleweight bout between two former PRIDE veterans as Joey Villasenor of Jackson’s MMA takes on Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos of Chute Boxe. Also in middleweight action, welterweight standout Nick Thompson will move up in weight to battle Tim Kennedy who is a Green Beret and Army Ranger. In a 160-pound catchweight bout, former EliteXC star Conor Heun, who recently made an appearance on MTV’s Bully Beatdown will look to be the bully this time around, as he locks horns with TUF 2 and UFC veteran Jorge Gurgel. In women’s action, two of the Top 5 ranked bantamweights will face each other as the submission savvy Shayna Baszler of South Dakota meets the undefeated KO artist Sarah Kaufman of British Columbia, Canada. The final main card bout that is guaranteed to be aired on Showtime, will see the return of local favorite Cory Devela of Victory Athletics tangle with Luke Rockhold of American Kickboxing Academy. The interesting thing about this fight is that Devela executed a highlight reel Harai Goshi KO of Joe Riggs at the last Strikeforce in Washington state in February 2008. This time around he will be facing a man in Rockhold, who is trained by Dave Camarillo, who happens to be one of the slickest Judo instructors in MMA.
