Biography
Born May 19, 1981 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Georges St. Pierre is considered by many to be one of the best pound for pound mixed martial artists in the world today. He started learning Kyokushin karate at age seven to defend himself against a school bully.[1] He took up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after his Karate teacher died, and has also trained in wrestling and boxing. He has dreamed of becoming a UFC champion since watching Royce Gracie fight in UFC 1 in 1993.[2]
St. Pierre trains with Triumph Fight Team and the Canadian National Wrestling Team, among others. Prior to his fight with B.J. Penn at UFC 58, he trained at the Renzo Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy in New York City. St. Pierre is a former member of the BTT Canada MMA team.
Although St. Pierre is a Canadian fighter, he believes he is more popular in the United States than in his home country. "In the States, when I walk down the street, people everywhere recognize me, so I don't really have a private life…[in Canada] though, no one knows who I am”, says St. Pierre.[3]
Career
St. Pierre recently defeated B.J. Penn at UFC 58 to become the #1 contender for the UFC Welterweight title. St. Pierre won the match by a split decision and will face current champion Matt Hughes in the near future, rumored to be in September at UFC 63.
