Joe Moreira is known for being a giving and skilled practitioner of bjj. He was known early on in the US for putting on some of the biggest (and fairly ref'd) tournaments in the early years of american bjj. He was also one of the early instructors to come over to the US and teach openly to the public.

Although a bjj practitioner, Joe is also known for his judo. His mix of judo and bjj has given him a deeper understanding of the art which he has transmitted to his students. He studied judo in Japan with the legendary Isao Okano. Okano was known for having not only great standing throwing skills but also excellent ground skills. Joe learned much from him, and incorporated more into his bjj as a result.

The best thing Joe is known for is his high-level of instructors that he produces. Notable black belts under Joe include Roy Harris, Randy Bloom, and Michael Jen. The instructors under Joe are always known to be some of the most detailed oriented teachers of the art of bjj. Joe is also known for being non-political, never bowing into the political ramblings that occurr from time to time in bjj.
