Cesar Gracie Brown Belt who has had quite a bit of success in the UFC due to his unorthodox fighting style. He is very slick on the ground but likes nothing more than to stand and bang with his opponents. He is known as a very cocky fighter who likes to talk trash very fighting. Nick is the type of fighter that you either love or hate.

Also has a younger brother Nate Diaz who is an up and coming MMA fighter himself and a BJJ Purple Belt.

Career

BJJ

Nick Diaz is actually a very accomplished gi grappler. Major titles won include the US Open Purple Belt Absolute in 2004 and the Pan Americans Brown Belt Medium Weight Division in 2005. He also has a very quick win over Jorge "Macaco" Patino in submission grappling. Rare for an MMA fighter as accomplished as he is, when competing in BJJ he has a very sport jiu jitsu oriented game, as oppossed to a modifed MMA game. He continues to actively compete even with his MMA career.

UFC

Diaz made his UFC debut at UFC 44 where he defeated Jeremy Jackson by triangle choke. Diaz achieved what many consider an enormous upset victory at UFC 47 when he defeated Robbie Lawler by keeping the fight standing despite Robbie "Ruthless" Lawler's reputation for knockout power. Diaz faced Diego Sanchez in the Ultimate Fighter 2 Finale promotion put on by the UFC and lost by unanimous decision. The fight was brought about over Diaz's criticism of Diego's quick rise to fame. At UFC 57, he lost to Joe Riggs via unanimous decision. After the match, Riggs and Diaz apparently had a physical confrontation in a hospital room while recovering from the fight. Although both have confirmed something happened in the hospital, it is unclear what happened as police declined to follow up on the incident. No charges were pressed. It has been recently rumored that Nick Diaz will be participating in the upcoming fourth season of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike, which will focus on UFC veterans vying for a shot at the UFC title in the middleweight and welterweight divisions.

Gumby's Notes

First of all, out of all the tough competitors I have fought, Nick is the only one to have defeated me by submission (kneebar), so I'm obligated to give him props there. Secondly, while Nick may talk trash in situations, I hardly think of him as cocky; I consider him one of the most real guys I have met in this sport. His adaptability to whatever sport he participates in (whether BJJ, Sub Grappling, MMA, Boxing or even doing triatholons), is amazing.

Aside from his agressiveness, Nick has a decent single leg takedown, and is equally adapt on the top or bottom. His favorite submission is the kimura, or maybe the kneebar. Most surprisingly is his excellent upsidedown guard which he will frequently use in competition. His losses tend to be when he is stuck on the bottom and his opponent does not allow him to move.

Nick Diaz is definitely the total package, and should provide plenty of exciting matches for years to come.
