Background
Born in 1952, Jacare began his BJJ training at 11 years old. At the age of 16, he joined the famous Gracie School in Copacabana where he grew up. Jacare´ and the Gracies lived in the same neighborhood, so, he got to met all of them. He was in the same BJJ class as Carlos Gracie Jr. , Crolin Gracie, Fabio Santos, Mauricio Motta Gomes, the Machado Brothers, Rickson Gracie, and many others.
After competing extensively from 1972 to 1985 and working as an assistant instructor at the Gracie School, Jacare opened his first school in Ipenema, Brazil. He soon became one of the most respected instructors in Brazil going on to found and coach the the famous powerhouse Alliance Team (along with his top student Fabio Gurgel)headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.
His teams routinely do well at competitions in part to sheer number of competitors from all affliated schools that enter the tournaments. Has several stand out students that have made past and present marks on the competitive circuit in both BJJ and MMA including Fabio Gurgel, Roberto Traven and Ryan Ellison. Marcelo Garcia is part of his association training in Sao Paulo, Brazil under Fabio Gurgel.
Jacare began his training with Carlson Gracie Sr., but then switched to being a student of Rolls. He was the last person that Rolls ever awared a black belt. A skilled practitioner, he has made his name nowadays as a excellent trainer. Although known for Alliance (originally known as the Master Team), other members of his team split off and formed their own team named Brasa, it was at that point that the name was changed from Master Team to Alliance. They still credit Jacare with their training and consider him a coach as well.
