UFC 61: Bitter Rivals is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday, July 8, 2006. The event takes place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada and will be broadcast live on pay-per-view in the United States. As of June 5, 2006, UFC 61 is on track to be the fastest pay-per-view sell out to-date. All octagon-level floor seats are sold out, and fewer than 2,000 tickets overall remain. Select octagon-side Seats are still available through “Ultimate Seating Auction" through the UFC 61 Tickemaster outlet until Friday, June 7 at 4:00pm PT. The “Ultimate Seating Auction” allows fans to bid on 62 premium tickets located within the first six rows of the Octagon. [1]

The main event between Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock was originally placed on hold due to Ortiz's knee injury during his last bout, and UFC President Dana White confirmed on The Carmichael Dave Show on 1140 KHTK Sacramento radio that Ortiz would be replaced by Forrest Griffin.[2] It was later revealed Ortiz has a fractured fibula and not an ACL tear as originally feared. Therefore, Ortiz has decided to go ahead with the fight against Ken Shamrock as originally planned and that is the new main event for the show. [3]

Dana White also announced that Tim Sylvia will defend the UFC Heavyweight Title against Andrei Arlovski, a match requested by Sylvia, the new champion.[4]

Joe Stevenson announced he would be competing at the PPV in the Lightweight division against seasoned veteran, Yves Edwards. [5]

MMA Weekly has reported that veteran Hermes Franca, Lightweight champion of WEC and AFC, will be making his return the UFC in the lightweight division against Roger Huerta. [6]

The event is sponsored by Xyience.
