Ricardo de la Riva is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He is most famous for inventing the De la Riva Guard. He was voted one of the five top BJJ players in the world by Gracie Magazine. De La Riva received his black belt from Carlson Gracie Sr. and is also well known for having beaten Royce Gracie in a BJJ tournament.
He started training in January of 1980, when he was 15 years, in the house of the friend Marcus Vinícius - also a pupil of Carlson Gracie.
He was awarded his Black Belt in 1986 and was well known for having used his guard to defeat opponents such as Royce Gracie, Royler Gracie and Rolker Gracie (Beating Royler and Rolker in the same tournament and beating Royce on two occasions).
