December 16th, 2010 was an exciting day for Tim Sledd and his students at Small Axe Jiu Jitsu. Sledd announced that he and Andre Galvao have teamed up to form Galvao’s first American affiliate school. “It was an exciting announcement. Professor Galvao and I decided over a month ago that this affiliation needed to happen, but I wanted to give my students a Christmas gift by announcing it at our annual Christmas party,” Sledd said.

Andre Galvao recently opened his own school in San Diego and has been traveling the United States on a seminar spree. It was during a visit to Sledd’s school, Small Axe Jiu Jitsu, that the two became acquainted and had the opportunity to explore forming the affiliation. “It was an honor to have Andre consider me and my students to be a part of his team. He and I share a set of values, both personal, and professional that I feel will make our affiliation very strong.”
Galvao’s first American affiliate school is located in the heart of South Central Indiana. A half an hour south of Indianapolis, in Martinsville, Indiana, Small Axe Jiu Jitsu offers a curriculum of jiu jitsu for everyone. The school was formed in 2005 as a component program of Gentry Martial Arts. The school prides itself on being a family friendly school focused on developing well rounded martial artists. “Gentry Martial Arts focuses on developing honor and discipline in its students. When I met Professor Galvao, I knew he would help us maintain those qualities in our BJJ program.”
Tim Sledd is the head BJJ instructor at Small Axe Jiu Jitsu. An avid competitor, Sledd won the 2010 Michigan Open Brown Belt Open Weight Division. Sledd, the Chief Trial Prosecutor in his county, is married with two children and enjoys spending time with them when not teaching, training, or competing.
