Copa Pacifica 7

Copa Pacifica 7February 28-29, 2004Costa Mesa CA,

Hard to believe, but this is the 7th iteration of Cleber and Lili Luciano`s Copa Pacifica. Even more unbelievable, OntheMat has been there in some form since the beginning (as competitors well before we even came up with OntheMat). So it`s with a certain fondness that we make the trip to Southern California year after year.

The first day began with the Children`s division. The Copa has traditionally had one of the largest children`s divisions around and this year was no exception. Each year the talent level of the youngsters keeps going up and up and it`s very probable your next generation of World Champions are getting started here. The day continued with the white belt and all the women`s divisions.

Later in the day Tim Cartmell from Cleber Luciano defeated Michael Sillyman from Megaton`s academy by decision in a match where the majority of the time was spent in Cartmell`s guard.

On the second day the blue and purple belts saw the majority of action on the mat. There were also several super fight black and brown belt matches scheduled.

In the first black belt match Mario “Toro” Flores defeated Pedro Carvalho by advantage. The majority of the match had Pedro closing his guard and looking for several lapel chokes which were successfully defended by Toro. The match continued this way for a long time, but as time was winding down Pedro opened his guard, this caused Toro to immediately jump for the foot lock which gave him the deciding advantage, although Pedro quickly defended and countered with a foot lock of his own. With neither submission attempt really going anywhere, Pedro closed the guard again and the match finished there.

In the second black belt match Ricardo “Franjinha” Muller beat by a score of 2-0 a judo black belt named Taka Kunou from Japan. Taka has actually competed with a good deal of success against other BJJ blackbelts, so he was no stranger to this type of competition. Perhaps knowing that Taka would be dangerous on his feet, Franjinha quickly jumped to half guard which was well defended by Taka. Franjinha opened up got a quick sweep for two points and nearly took the back, but Taka was able to dump his weight forward which forced Franjnha on the defensive. For quite some time the match continued with Taka riding Franjinha`s back -sans hooks however, while the former looked for his avenue of escape. Franjinha`s grip on Taka`s pants leg actually caused them to dear all the way up to the knee, providing a break in the action. In one of the lighter moment of the tournament, Taka began to run out of the gym to change, and when Cleber tried to call him back to the mat, Taka quickly made it clear that he wasn`t prepared to share what was underneath his pants with the audience! The match continued from the same position, and Franjihna was able to pull full guard. Taka moved to pass and forced Franjinha back to half guard and the match ended here 2-0 for Franjinha.

Brown Belt action saw Thiago Vella (Ryan Gracie) defeated Demetrious Ramos (BJJ Revolution) via referee decision in a match that largely consisted of Demetrious trying to pass Tiago`s open guard. Jason Middaugh (Fabio Santos) then beat Ulpiano Malachias (Aloisio Silva) 8-2 in what proved to be the most exciting superfight of the day, Middaugh dominated position wise and had some very close submission attempts. Ulpiano managed to fend everything off and even started to stage a comeback of sorts late in the match, however it was too little, too late as Middaugh dominance early in the match was reflected in the final score.

See you at the next Copa!
