Donald Cerrone faces a new opponent at uFC 187 after potential number one contender Khabib Nurmagomedov tore his meniscus and will be out over five months.
The card already took a hit after Light-Heavyweight champion Jon Jones had his title stripped and the matchup between him and Anthony Johnson was cancelled. Luckily, Daniel Cormier stepped up to fill in the slot and will now fight for the vacant title. There is no denying that Donald Cerrone is a big draw for the UFC due to his style and ability to fight anyone at any time. He is coming off a UFC career best of seven straight wins that some him best perennial top ten fighter Jim Miller, former Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez, undefeated fighter Myles Jury and avenged his loss Benson Henderson as well in that span.
Many thought the matchup of Donald Cerrone and Khabib would produce the next title challenger. Unfortunately, the injury has forced someone to step up and even though multiple people thought they wanted the fight, it eventually went to John Makdessi. This is a huge opportunity for a fighter who has floated in and out of the top 15 in the UFC.
Donald Cerrone Now Face John Makdessi at UFC 187.
Makdessi burst onto the scene with two huge wins including a phenom of a knockout out over TUF alum Kyle Watson with a spinning back fist. Then he hit a rough patch losing two straight fights. Since then, he has gone 4-1. His only loss in that span is to the undefeated 12-0 fight Alan Patrick. His biggest wins in that span are to veteran fighters Sam Stout and Daron Cruickshank. None of that will matter if he can capture a win over Donald Cerrone. WIth only a few weeks until UFC 187 hits the airwaves, it will be hard to imagine if any more changes can rock this card. As a UFC fan, you better cross your fingers.
