
Arashi Do Martial Arts has been operating in Edmonton since 1997 and was recently voted BEST Martial Arts School by the readers of Vue Weekly. Offering classes for ages 4-7, 8-12, 13-16, and adults in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Shotokan Karate and Kettlebell Conditioning.
Arashi Do has been at the forefront of instructing BJJ, Muay Thai and Kettle bell training to the residents of Edmonton before it became popular. Arashi Do is leading the pack again by being the only school in Alberta to teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai to children as young as four years old.
Arashi Do North is owned and operated by Mike Yackulic. Mike began his training in 1992 with Arashi Do and has earned Black belts in Karate, BJJ, Muay Thai (Khru status) as well as an accomplished amateur an professional competitor and coach to all levels of athletes from local to UFC . Recent awards include winning a gold medal in a BJJ tournament in Brazil called Taca de Rio (Rio Cup) in the Black belt division and winning a gold medal in the No Gi Black belt Super fight against a local Brazilian (the only foreigner to do so). Mike has also taken numerous trips to Brazil and Thailand during his last 12 years of teaching.
Arashi Do Martial Arts is also host to Alberta’s largest and longest running BJJ and Muay Thai tournament, the Mind Body Soul, which has divisions for competitors 4 to 54 (yes we actually had a 54 year old compete last year). Competitors come from all over Western Canada to challenge themselves in this fast rising sport. The Submission Series grappling tournament, also run by Arashi Do, offers competitors a chance to compete for a title belt for Alberta’s Best Grappler over a series of four events.
