Gerard Mousasi had a rough time with his UFC career at the beginning where he was injured going 2-2 with losses to Machida and Ronaldo Souza and the wins were not even that big. Since that four fight span, he has gone 4-1 with his only loss coming to Uriah Hall by TKO in a fight he was winning. His wins came over Dan Henderson, Thales Leites and Thiago Santos among others. This has now earned him a shot against Vitor Belfort who is currently riding a losing streak.
Belfort had won three straight all by knockout over many great talents, but then he lost in the first round to Chris Weidman for the Middleweight title. After that fight, he took out Dan Henderson again via head kick before being taken out by Jacare in the first round again. Now, he has a chance to reclaim some momentum when he takes on Mousasi because at the age of 29, he does not have much time left in the sport.
This fight is supposed to take place at UFC 204. There is no current rumors for this card, but this si a fight the could be the co main event but most likely will not be the main event. There has been rumors of the Bisping and Henderson rematch coming up this year While 205 has not been announced either it looks like two fighters who need to rematch will be taking place with Jose Aldo getting his fight for the real Featherweight title against Conor McGregor but neither of those fights are set either. Still, a win for Mousasi in this fight will move him to 5-1 in his past six fights and set him up as a win or two away from a title shot. Maybe a match with the returning Yoel Romero?
