The UFC has continued to contest titles on their Fox cards, and UFC on Fox 9 will be no different. This will be the third time in five cards that the Lightweight title will be contested on free TV as well. The problem is that it will not be TJ Grant fighting for the title like most people assumed. Instead, former Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson sill be fighting in the main event against newly minted Anthony Pettis. Thomson may only be 1-1 in his last two fights, but his scintillating knockout of Nate Diaz and Grant’s injury moved him into the main event. This is not the only great fight on the card. Three other big bouts have been announced for the card as well.
The co-main event will be a match between Michael MacDonald and Urijah Faber. This bout was thought about when both fighters won their last fight, but the two were hesitant since they had trained together before. The UFC wanted to have Faber face off against Frankie Edgar, but both were reluctant to agree upon a weight class. Now, this fight could determine the number one contender in the bantamweight division, especially if Dominick Cruz is not healed yet.
Next, the next featherweight contender could be decided as well. It is assumed that Ricardo Lamas is bound to get the next title shot since Chad Mendes has not been granted his rematch. Mendes will instead face off with top ten featherweight Nik Lentz. Mendes has finished four straight fights by TKO, and could this be number five? With previous wins over Erik Koch, Cub Swanson, and Clay Guida. The featherweight division is pretty stacked, but the winner of this match could create a big shift in that dynamic.
Lastly, the flyweight division has a new challenger on its radar, because former top ten bantamweight Scott Jorgensen has made the fateful weight cut down to 125. He has not easy task in his debut as he takes on former tournament entrant Ian McCall. This will be a big test for Jorgensen since McCall since he has faced Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson who are number one and two in the division. That means if Jorgensen beats McCall impressively than there will be a shot at the title in his future shortly.
