Fernando from Jordan Team shines and finishes on top in jiu-jitsu competitionBy M. Satya Narayan, Senior ReporterPublished: March 09, 2008, 00:03 Abu Dhabi: Luiz Fernando (Jordan/ Mirza Team) was the toast of the crowd in the Emirates Cup Jiu-Jitsu Championship in which the fighters from the UAE and Bahrain also impressed.In a Team Brazil Vs Team Jordan final in the Open category, Fernando who is a trainer at the Jordan Armed Forces got the better of Pablo Leite to make it a memorable double win.Earlier, Fernando had also impressed as he won the over 97 kg category defeating the UAE’s Ameen Touati in the one-day competition being held under the patronage of Shaikh Zayed Bin Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Yasin Omar from Jordan took home the third medal sealing three medals for Jordan.Former world Brazilian Jiu Jitsu champion Carlos Santos, the event organiser, said the championship witnessed some skilful tussles and praised the rise in standard of the arab nationals. Zaid Mirza, Board Secretary of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Jordan said he was really happy with the outcome of the Jordanian athletes as they participated with Team B for this event in order to give athletes a chance to compete internationally and gain valuable experience. The prize distribution ceremony was attended by Shaikh Zayed Bin Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Shaikh Hamdan Bin Sultan Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, General Mohammad Noor Miqdadi from Jordan, and Abdullah Nasser Al Jaabari, representing the sponsors.
