Recently, MMA legends Anderson Silva and Frabricio Werdum, both natives of Brazil, joined forces with their friend Scotty Nelson, creator of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi company called Lucky Gi and founder of On The Mat, as well as Co-Founder of CHIPSA Hospital, to help a 35-year old Brazilian man named Willy win his fight with Stage 4 undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
The transformation for this courageous cancer survivor was incredible.
But victory did NOT come easy and the Fight isn’t over
Nelson reflects, “In a fight with cancer, very much like in a fight in the cage, just because you’re winning the first couple rounds, doesn’t mean you can take it easy and give the cancer a chance to recover.
If you do, it can come back even stronger, and the same treatment strategy you we’re using in the beginning might not be as effective. Just like in the cage the opponent (cancer) can learn your game and counter.”
Which is exactly what happened with Willy.
Originally scheduled for a standard 3-week stay, Willy saw amazing initial results and extended his stay. But eventually he had to go back to Brazil.
After going home and finding himself unable to apply the same treatments, the cancer came back with a vengeance.
That’s when they called in the big guns.

Willy got the support of his Brazilian fans again and crowdfunded another trip to CHIPSA Hospital, and when Anderson Silva and Fabricio Werdum saw what was happening, they immediately reached out to their friend Scotty Nelson, to see what they could do to help a fellow Brazilian.
Scotty Nelson and the CHIPSA Hospital Medical Team (Think The MMA Team for Cancer) adapted Willy’s treatments to his new circumstances and the results were unbelievable.

Willy’s fight isn’t over but he is on to his championship rounds. And, he has some real champions in his corner to win his fight with cancer!
