1st Belt Promotion for 2011! New Year! New Format!

March 12th was the first of 4 belt and stripe promotions to be held this year at Jay Pages Jiu-Jitsu and Phoenix Combat Academy. With the New Year came new changes to the format that had been used for many years. In past Belt Promotions, I had put forth a test. A test of a student’s competency level of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and its techniques! However, in past years it had simply taken too long to go through the test. I wanted to involve all who came to show their support of the strip or belt recipients. So with that in mind, I put the changes in motion. First, I dropped the test itself and then I increased the mat hours required. I increased the mat hour requirement so high that I figured, if students meet the required time and put in the effort to learn, they would be competent and proficient in their technique. I only implemented the test to see where their skill levels stood. Second, I increased the belt promotions from twice to 4 times a year. As my team grew and continues to grow, individuals advance at different rates, so I felt it unfair to make those who are ready wait. Lastly, instead of a test I would do a free small mini 2 hour seminar for all so that all get something out of attending the belt promotion. It was a great turnout and I was happy with the results of the new format. This new format forces students to take a conscious effort towards their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training. It forces the student to care. It also gives the student goals to strive for.

This past march 12th brought new blue belts and Professor Jay Pages and Jay Pages Jiu-Jitsu’s first ever promoted Purple Belt! All had worked hard and more than earned their newly received belts! Congratulations! We are all so very proud of you guys!
