Moving on from the first session they took at the gym the month before, which was ways of getting the back, Darren took the students one step further and showed a number of ways of finishing the opponent from the back position. The class started with a thorough warm up from Helen and Darren introduced a number of neat drills that centred on moving round your training partner and getting used to spinning round the body and in step by step progression, moved on to getting the hooks in and taking the back.

From the back position, Darren demonstrated a number of escapes from this position and of course a number of counters to the escapes before moving on to the last section of the session, finishing your opponent from the back. Darren showed two of the most common defences when the opponent is trying to protect their neck and from each position demonstrated a number of ways to break their positions and gain the upper hand. Some of the moves were new to me, yet once drilled are very easy ways to break your partner’s defence and finish off the fight on a high percentage basis and this was the main point of the evening, using high percentage moves to finish off a fight, without having to waste too much energy in the process.

Another bonus of the evening came by way of Darren teaching a technique on my good self, involving the chin strap technique; as Darren applied the move to my neck, a loud pop echoed round the gym, right in my neck to be exact and as such, released month’s worth of pain and stiffness from my neck, so if anyone is in need of an osteopath, come see Darren, he’ll soon put you right!

As I said at the start of this article, Darren and Helen will be at Caged Steel on a monthly basis, usually on the first Tuesday of the month and is open to all grapplers, whether they be BJJ, no gi or MMA practitioners and both Neil and Jamie from Caged Steel extend an open door policy at the club, so make the most of this kind gesture and get some seriously technically sound instruction from one of the most under rated coaches in the UK.
