Keenan Cornelius is the most dominant competitor in the brown belt division in Jiu Jitsu history.  Not only has he won double gold in his weight class and the open division at every major IBJJF tournament in 2012, he is also still undefeated as a brown belt.

A Monster

Keenan is a monster.  But he wasn’t born one.  He forged himself over the past few years, leaving high school at the age of 16 in California to move to Hawaii to train full time, to then moving to Maryland at the age of 18, to now training out of Team Atos in San Diego, CA.  While Keenan has some natural flexibility to help his Jiu Jitsu game, what it truly took for him to improve was an environment to help him grow as an athlete. From there, it took time on the mat, drilling, and determination.

In the last year in a half Keenan has become the elite level competitor that he is today.  Before this he had been plugging in time and effort to accumulate and hone all the skills that he has developed today to compete and win in modern BJJ.

Luckily for all of us, Keenan has come out with a DVD that shows and teaches some of his amazing techniques that he uses to win in competition today.  It may have taken him six years to come up with these attacks and counterattacks, but he has been kind enough to display these hard earned techniques in his upcoming DVD, Breakthrough Jiu Jitsu Concepts.

Understanding the Concepts

It is no secret that time on the mat and repetition of specific movements to gain proper positions and submissions will award great results.  However, learning the most efficient way of spending time on the mat and the correct way of executing repetitions is a science unto itself.  If you want to start improving as rapidly as Keenan has in a short amount of time, then it is vital that you learn as a Jiu Jitsu practitioner and as a Jiu Jitsu competitor the concepts needed to get there.

Just the grip breaking part of the DVD should be enough to spark the interest of any Jiu Jitsu player.  But other crucial techniques like the passing of the inverted guard, funky wrist locks from closed guard, finishing omoplatas, Ezekiel chokes from various positions, and some amazing and reliable ways to finishing chokes from back mount are littered throughout.

Classical vs. Modern BJJ

In today’s ever changing and growing world of Jiu Jitsu, it is important to keep up with the times.  Whether you prefer a more classical approach or a more modern approach to Jiu Jitsu, it is important to understand what is being developed today.  If you are not planning on becoming a 50/50 or inverted guard player, Keenan’s DVD shows lots of examples and ways to counter and shut down these positions.  If these more modern applications of Jiu Jitsu make up a good part of your game today, then seeing how Keenan utilizes these positions for attack and also how he would pass and counter your techniques is essential.

Whichever your preference, playing the modern game or defending against it, most gi players will garner high rewards to their Jiu Jitsu game through Keenan’s instructionals.

But you don’t have to take my word for it; here are some sample videos from his DVD here.
