News from United Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Tournament 2005!

Dear Athletes, Instructors and Jiu-Jitsu Family Community,

The United Gracie Team proudly presents!!

UNITED GRACIE JIU-JITSU TOURNAMENT 2005!

We would love to see all athletes, spectators, family, martial artists, etc… gather in this friendly atmosphere that will help promote the great art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the Main Gym of San Francisco State University located at 1600 Holloway Ave. in San Francisco, California on Saturday, May 14th, 2005.

The United Gracie Tournament has been a big success and gets bigger and better every year. This year is going to be no different. We strive to make the tournament better and take it to a higher level. We guarantee that the spectators and the athletes will be very happy with the new twists!

The event will have six fighting areas coordinated and controlled by the Black Belt Referees only, and all with digital timers and the official score boards from the North America Federation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu so that competitors and spectators alike can keep track of fights.

All Athletes, in first and second place, will be awarded gold and silver medals respectively. In addition to awards, all athletes will receive free tournament T-shirts. Also, this year we will be giving away great prizes totaling $1,000 in a raffle open to competitors and spectators. Raffle tickets will be distributed upon entry.

In 2004 we had record numbers of almost 500 competitors and 2,500 spectators to view one of the most completive and skillful Jiu-Jitsu contests. In our highly anticipated 4th year, The United Gracie Crew is anticipating a large turnout we expect over 600 athletes and over 3,500 spectators with even more exciting matches. Men, women, and children of all age groups and belt levels, from white to black belts are invited to compete and attend.

Ralph Gracie stated: “My brother Charles and I will host a top level event, one that all athletes will be proud of! We would like to take the time and thank our sponsors for supporting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the United Gracie 2005. * COMPETITION FORMAT:

The United Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Tournament 2005 will use a single elimination system. We will be using the same event management system that was used during the 3rd United Gracie Tournament 2004. After you pass the check-in table you will receive a Match Queuing Card with your name, mat number, and match number for your first fight. If you are the winner of your match the scoring table will issue you another card with NEW information for your next match. Keep your card with you at all times as you will not be allowed in the competition area with out it.

* SCORING SYSTEM:

In order to receive the points the competitor must have control of your opponent for 3 seconds. Once you have the opponent controlled you will receive points. It is very important that the competitors keep an eye on the score board and the time so that the competitors can keep track of the fight.

“12 Total accrued points” During the normal match time (NOT the Sudden Death Overtime!); the first competitor to score 12 points is declared the winner. The reason we have implemented this rule is that the purpose of Jiu-Jitsu is to submit or completely dominate your opponent. If a competitor scores 12 points in a match, we KNOW that this is a display of total dominance over the opponent and thus a victory. This rule also has the potential to increase the action of the match because a competitor will benefit by aggressively pursuing points instead of stalling. This is also adding to the enjoyment of spectators who like to see action filled fights.

Sudden Death overtime is 2 minutes for White, Blue, and Purple Belts, and 3 minutes for Brown and Black Belts. During the Sudden Death overtime, the fighter to score the FIRST POINT of any type is declared the immediate winner and the match is over. If no score is made by either fighter during the Sudden Death Overtime, then the referee will then determine and declare the winner of the match.

THROWS AND TAKEDOWNS ———————– 2 points KNEE ON THE STOMACH ————————— 2 points SWEEP & REVERSE FROM THE GUARD ——– 2 points PASSING THE GUARD ——————————– 3 points FRONT MOUNT POSITION ————————– 4 points BACK MOUNT POSITION —————————- 4 points TAP-OUT END OF MATCH. The competitor is declared the immediate winner.** 12 TOTAL ACCRUED POINTS` equals a win (see the details of 12 accrued points)** SUDDEN DEATH applies if score is tied at the end of match (see the details for Sudden Death definition)** This rule applies to all junior and adult male and female divisions, and belt ranks in the tournament.
