UFC 62 Review

On August 26, the UFC once again returned to Mandalay Bay to bring us UFC 62. The much awaited rematch of Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar, along with Chuck Liddell taking on Jiu-Jitsu specialist Renato Sobral had fans ready for an evening of fights.


On August 26, the UFC once again returned to Mandalay Bay to bring us UFC 62. The much awaited rematch of Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar, along with Chuck Liddell taking on Jiu-Jitsu specialist Renato Sobral had fans ready for an evening of fights.


In the first fight of the evening Yushin Okami took on Alan Belcher


Round 1


Both fighters feeling each other out in the first round. Okami takes down Belcher, both fighters end up on their feet. Okami lands a couple of good punches.


Round 2


Belcher is a little more aggressive. Belcher lands a knee but Okami takes him to the ground. Okami appears to have the upper hand on the ground. Both fighters end up on their feet again. Okami takes belcher to the ground to end the second round.



Round 3


Okami takes Belcher to the ground and takes Belcher’s back. Okami unable to finish the choke lands several punches to the back of Belcher’s head. Belcher escapes to his feet but Okami lands several punches and takes belcher to the ground. Okami ground and pounds Belcher. Okami wins the decision.



In the second fight of the evening David Heath defeated Cory Walmsley



The fighter starts off with a big right hand from Walmsley who then gets taken to the ground by Heath. Heath using his ground and pound technique lands several good shots to Walmsley. Walmsley tries to stand up but Heath takes his back and wins at 2:32 of the first round via the rear naked choke hold.


The third fight of the evening Wilson Gouveia defeated Wes Combs


In the first round both fighters are feeling each other out. Gouveia lands a nice leg kick and a takes down Combs. Once on the ground Gouveia takes Combs back and applies a rear naked choke hold. Combs appears to not even attempt to defend the choke. Gouveia wins by tap out at 3:23 of the first round.


The fourth fight of the evening Eric Schafer defeated Rob MacDonald


In the first round both fighters appear to be feeling each other out. MacDonald tries a take down but gets a guillotine pulled on him. Schafer takes down MacDonald and passes his guard. Schafer gets the mount against MacDonald who rolls over and gives up his back. Schafer takes his back and MacDonald spins around to try to escape. Schafer applies an arm tri-angle on MacDonald until he is unconscious. Schafer wins at 2:26 of the first round.


The fifth fight of the evening Hermes Franca defeating Jamie Varner


Round 1


Both fighters exchanging leg kicks and punches but are mostly feeling each other out. Franca pulls a guard tries an arm bar then roll to an ankle lock but misses, both fighters end up back on their feet. Franca tries a guillotine ends up on the ground, Varner lands some punches from Franca’s guard. Both fighters back to their feet, Varner lands a good knee and Franca a solid punch to Varner’s head.


Round 2


Franca throws a leg kick, Varner grabs the leg and takes Franca to the ground. Varner lands several good punches to Franca who then ties up Varner. The referee then restarts the fighters on their feet. Franca pulls guard and Varner picks up Franca and slams him on the ground. Varner gets Franca on the ground and uses good ground and pound techniques.


Round 3


Franca steps up the action and lands a knee to Varner. Varner gets a point taken away for running but is given much needed time to rest. Varner takes Franca to the ground where Franca starts what looks like an omaplata but ends up pulling an arm bar on Varner. Franca needed the submission to win and gets it at 3:31 of the third round. Franca wins by tap out to an arm bar.


The sixth fight of the evening Cheick Kongo defeated Christian Wellisch


In the first round Wellisch throws some wild punches. Kongo lands a good kick but then is taken down by Wellisch. Wellisch works a good arm bar but Kongo has a good escape technique and gets out of an almost picture perfect arm bar. Both fighters are back to their feet. Kongo lands several good punches to Wellisch’s head. The fight is stopped to get Wellisch’s mouth piece. The fight starts again and Kongo lands several good punches and then a devastating knee to Wellisch’s face. Wellisch goes down and the referee stops the fight at 2:51 in the first. Kongo wins.


The seventh fight was Nick Diaz against Josh Neer


Round 1


Diaz and Neer swap punches in the center of the ring. Both fighters appear to be feeling each other out. This continues through the first round with neither fighter going to the ground. Diaz using short concise punches with Neer throwing the heavier punches.


Round 2 Diaz and Neer both meet in the center of the ring. Diaz still using short punches and lands a big kick to Neer’s head. Diaz then takes Neer to ground who then pulls guard. Diaz drops some good punches on Neer and both fighters end up on their feet. Neer ends the round with some heavy punches but Diaz is the more active fighters with his punches the entire round.


Round 3


Diaz and Neer meet in the center of the ring. Neer tries to take Diaz down with a guillotine choke and Diaz escapes. Diaz applies a Kimura and taps out Neer at 3:19 in the third round.


The eight fight was Forrest Griffin against Stephan Bonnar


Round 1


Both fighters are in the center of the ring feeling each other out. Griffin looks relaxed but Bonnar appears to be nervous. Griffin seems to be the more aggressive puncher with Bonnar trying a leg kick. Bonnar lands a spinning back kick on Griffin. Griffin lands several punches to Bonnar’s head


Round 2


Looks like a remake of the ultimate fighter match up. Griffin lands several good punches and Bonnar moving around the ring. Bonnar lands some good punches but Griffin counters with just as good of punches. Bonnar seems to be more relaxed this round. Griffin has the upper hand with the punches but Bonnar lands a good right hand towards the end of the round.


Round 3


Griffin comes out landing several good punches. Griffin is the more aggressive right off. Griffin lands a kick to Bonnar’s head. Bonnar was throwing heavy punches but Griffin throwing more accurate punches. The fight ends with both fighters punching it out with each other. Griffin wins by unanimous decision.




The final fight of the night was the Champion Chuck Liddell defending his title against Renato Sobral


In the first round Liddell and Sobral throw a few punches. Sobral chases Liddell with punches and in the process gets punched in the head. As Sobral continues forward he gets caught with an upper cut and goes to the ground. Sobral tries to roll to his guard but Liddell starts to ground and pound him. Sobral takes several shots to the head and the referee stops the fight at 1:35 in the first round. Liddell defends his title with a TKO win over Sobral.
