In the years to come you will see other tournaments, people, friends and families come and go from the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. However, Charles and his brother Ralph can promise you that they are here for the long-term, making the lasting commitment to a sport they live and love.
It is their dream to unite all Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in America under one family for the benefit and the growth of the sport. Charles and Ralph have dedicated their lives to bring quality to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and the commitment to bring quality BJJ tournaments to the United States and the rest of the world!

4 – Scoring System:
In order to receive the points the competitor must have control of your opponent for 3 seconds. Once you have the opponent controlled you will receive points. It is very important that the competitors keep an eye on the score board and the time so that the competitors can keep track of the fight.
This year at the United Gracie Tournament we have eliminated the “ADVANTADGE” system for scoring all matches. In its replacement we are introducing the “SUDDEN DEATH” system.
“12 Total accurate points” During the normal match time (NOT the Sudden Death Overtime!); the first competitor to score 12 points is declared the winner. The reason we have implemented this rule is that the purpose of Jiu-Jitsu is to submit or completely dominate your opponent. If a competitor scores 12 points in a match, we KNOW that this is a display of total dominance over the opponent and thus a victory. This rule also has the potential to increase the action of the match because a competitor will benefit by aggressively pursuing points instead of stalling. This is also adding to the enjoyment of spectators who like to see action filled fights.
“Sudden Death” overtime is 2 minutes for White, Blue, and Purple Belts, and 3 minutes for Brown and Black Belts.During the Sudden Death overtime, the fighter to score the FIRST POINT of any type is declared the immediate winner and the match is over. If no score is made by either fighter during the Sudden Death Overtime, then the referee will then determine and declare the winner of the match.
“Holding onto two arms simultaneously” Competitors are NOT allowed to hold onto both of his opponent`s sleeves or arms simultaneously for longer than 20 seconds without attacking. This rule has been implemented to prevent the recent trend of some fighters to grab both arms and hold on in an attempt to “STALL THE FIGHT”.* This rule applies to all juniors and adults male and female divisions and belt ranks in the tournament.
Scoring Points:
THROWS AND TAKEDOWNS ———————– 2 pointsKNEE ON THE STOMACH —————————- 2 pointsSWEEP & REVERSE FROM THE GUARD ——– 2 pointsPASSING THE GUARD ——————————— 3 pointsFRONT MOUNT POSITION ————————— 4 pointsBACK MOUNT POSITION —————————– 4 pointsTAP-OUT END OF MATCH. The competitor is declared the immediate winner.** 12 TOTAL ACCURATE POINTS` equals a win (see the details above of 12 accrued points)** SUDDEN DEATH applies if score is tied at the end of match (see the details above for Sudden Death definition)** This rule applies to all junior and adult male and female divisions, and belt ranks in the tournament.
5 – GI / Kimono:
All competitors must wear a SOLID colored Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu GI (Kimono), either ALL WHITE or ALL BLUE in color. NO OTHER COLORS OF ANY KIND! No mixing of colors. Example; white pants and blue top or blue pants and white top, etc… will NOT be allowed.Competitors will compete with regulation GIs only. A regulation GI is four fingers cuff clearance and sleeves are to be no shorter than 4″ from wrist between wrist and sleeve of GI.All male competitors are not allowed to wear any clothing underneath the GI including T-Shirts, Rash Guard, Sweatpants, etc…
6 – Weigh-Ins Time and Location:
Competitors, please note that weigh-ins will be conducted on the day of the tournament and on the mat before your first fight WITH THE GI ON. Remember! In the weight list the “GI” weight is already added, so make sure you are in the correct division.
7 – Weight Classes: (With GI ON)
Be aware that ALL COMPETITORS must show up at weigh-in with his/her GI ON. In the weight list the “GI” weight is already added, so make sure you are in the correct division. All competitors MUST bring a valid form of identification at the time of weigh-in.

It is not enough for a referee to mechanically conduct a match. He must exert his best efforts in each match to conduct the match smoothly and professionally so that the results can be satisfactory to all parties. A referee must always do his best make a just decision and accept the full responsibility for that decision.
